Vinyl Web Paint Line!
This line had a very old Reliance DC drive on it, giving them many problems over the years.
|
We added the drive below, with an option card for handling the Constant Torque Center Winder. (The wiring has been cleaned up since this photo was taken.) The Mentor II was used with an MD29 option containing CTCW software. |
Below are the pictures of the finished web coming out of the accumulator and being wound on one of the two turrets. The empty spindle is in the center, while the one being filled is behind and out of view here. The web went over a set of load cells mounted below the empty spindle! |

This Control Techniques Mentor II drive replaced an old Reliance FlexPak analog drive. |
Above is the winder in action! Note the tight edge control and smooth pull! The several ripples seen are from product thickness issues at the extruder. |
AIM Controls also modified the existing 5 motor system to allow them to track exactly from one speed source. This removed tension issues created by the old analog system. An analog line speed signal was digitized, sent to 5 controllers, which accepted feedback from Magnetic Pulse Generators, and created an error speed signal for the drives! System has been in production since 1996 without a hitch! Prior to that, the drive company had to send in men 2-3 times a year to "tweak" the system back into alignment. The system long ago paid for itself in maintenance costs!
